This tool allows customers to view the tents in various configurations, helping them understand the different setup options and features available. This functionality provides a highly accessible and engaging way for customers to interact with the product, making it easier for them to select the configuration that best meets their needs.

Looking Forward

Salewa is excited about the potential of augmented reality and plans to expand this technology to other products in their range. Luca Mich, Head of marketing operations at Salewa, notes that the success of the AR tents and the product selector has opened up new possibilities for virtualizing more items, providing customers with an immersive way to explore the full Salewa lineup. Additionally, Salewa is considering incorporating My AR Studio links directly into their website, a feature already supported by My AR Studio. This would allow customers to access AR models seamlessly while browsing the Salewa site, further enhancing the digital and interactive shopping experience. This move underscores Salewa’s ongoing commitment to innovation and customer engagement, continually finding new ways to connect with and serve their outdoor community.

Our Experience

The ability to offer customers a realistic and interactive way to explore our large-scale tents, particularly with the product selector, can significantly enhance the shopping experience. This feature not only makes the process more engaging but also enables customers to fully understand the scale and functionality of the products without the need for physical display space. The company also expressed gratitude to Lucas Preti, whose confidence in My AR Studio helped form this successful partnership. Salewa looks forward to continuing the collaboration to bring more of their products into the digital realm.

Our designs typically involve creating the sole using CAD software, which often includes attaching it to an upper scanned through photogrammetry. The rubber texture on the sole, generated by an algorithm, is highly detailed and consists of millions of polygons. Similarly, photogrammetry produces point clouds with equally dense polygon counts.

To present these models to our clients over the Internet in a fast and efficient manner, we needed to significantly reduce the size of the models by several orders of magnitude.

With the support of the My AR Studio team, we developed a workflow and implemented new techniques to compress this high-fidelity data into a format that could run smoothly on a smartphone. We employed two main techniques to achieve this. First, we created a low-poly version of the sole and then baked the high-poly model details into a texture applied to the low-poly model. This process allowed the intricate rubber pattern to be represented by a normal map and an occlusion map. For the photogrammetry model, we applied decimation and smoothing techniques, which proved effective for the dense, organic meshes we work with, making retopology unnecessary at this stage.

The following graphs illustrate the reduction in the number of polygons and vertices before and after optimization. We managed to scale down from millions of polygons to tens of thousands for a fast and deliverable AR experience.

One of the optimization made on our models. Far from the realms of science fiction, AR has evolved into a useful tool in our digital environment. It allows us to overlay information and graphics onto our real-world surroundings, providing helpful and engaging interactions.

The best part is that AR functionality is already included in the devices we use every day. You just open your smartphone's camera and see additional content that appears to coexist with the physical world. This level of interaction is now available, thanks to advancements in AR technology.

We invite you to explore and understand this technology as it grows to become a more standardized part of our digital toolkit. Prepare for a subtle shift in your daily experiences as AR brings a layer of practical magic that makes Life more interesting.

What powers AR on our smartphones?

Apple and Google made a huge effort to develop the core technologies to run AR experiences on our smartphones. These tools provide developers, including us at My AR Studio, with a rich set of features to create augmented reality experiences for both iOS and Android platforms.

Starting with ARKit, Apple's toolkit for iOS devices, developers are equipped to build intricate AR experiences tailored for iPhone and iPad users. ARKit offers a variety of capabilities including immersive visuals and interactive environments, making it a strong option for developers aiming to innovate in AR for Apple products.

On the other side is ARCore, Google’s offering for Android devices, enabling AR capabilities comparable to ARKit. ARCore allows developers to craft engaging AR experiences for Android users, merging digital elements with the real world smoothly and effectively.

A standout feature of both toolkits is ground detection, which permits the accurate placement of virtual objects onto real-world surfaces, enhancing the user's immersion by making digital objects appear as part of their physical surroundings.

Furthermore, both ARKit and ARCore support true size AR, facilitating applications that require precise measurements. This is useful for tasks such as previewing how furniture might look in a room or providing detailed architectural visualizations.

Why you don't need an app: it must be easy

At My AR Studio we believe that simplicity is a key factor in the adoption of a technology. You need to do your job. You don't need to worry if you customers have Android or iOS, if they use Safari or Chrome, if it's ARKit or ARCore.

You don't have to worry about creating apps. And your customer don't have to worry about downloading apps. No longer an abstract concept, AR is rapidly becoming a strategic imperative in the e-commerce sector, with an undeniable influence on the consumer shopping experience.

As we delve deeper, we'll illuminate the cornerstone role of AR in creating a seamless bridge between the physical and digital world, fostering a new dimension of e-commerce interactions that are safer, more convenient, and fun to explore!

The Evolution of Online Furniture Shopping

Imagine the early days of online shopping, a time when your decision to purchase a sofa, a desk, or any piece of furniture was dependent on flat, static images. These 2D pictures provided a basic idea of what an item looked like but limited by their inability to convey depth, texture, or how an object might fill a space. It was, in essence, a guessing game of dimensions and aesthetics—a leap of faith that what you saw on screen would match your expectations in reality.

As technology advanced, the introduction of 3D modeling marked the next significant leap. Through 3D visuals, online shoppers were given a better perspective. You could now rotate an object, view it from various angles, and get a somewhat clearer idea of its scale and the intricacies of its design. Though more informative than 2D images, 3D models were still confined to the digital landscape. They sat on your screen, waiting for you to mentally project them into your living space. The interaction remained largely one-sided, with the digitized environment failing to interact meaningfully with your physical world.

Then, enter the realm of Augmented Reality (AR). AR technology builds on and far surpasses the static 2D images and the more dynamic but still limited 3D models. It brings a revolutionary way to shop for furniture online by adding the critical third dimension of depth, turning viewing into experiencing. Augmented Reality doesn't just show you an object in a better light; it virtually places it in your room. With the camera on your phone or tablet, AR technology overlays a three-dimensional, digital model of your chosen piece of furniture onto your live room view. This seamless weaving together of the digital and physical worlds allows you to walk around the virtual piece, view it from every angle, and truly picture how it fits into your existing space—not just in terms of dimensions but also style, color, and feel.

This evolution from 2D to AR embodies a leap from imagining to seeing, from guessing to knowing. Now, the ability to visualize exactly how a new couch will look against your living room wall, or whether a new bed frame will match your bedroom's decor, is at your fingertips. Augmented Reality effectively dissolves the barriers between the digital and physical, inviting consumers to engage with products in their homes before making a financial commitment. It's not just about viewing or rotating a product; it's about placing it in your life, ensuring compatibility, and thereby fostering confidence in your purchase decisions.

How Augmented Reality Works

Curious about the inner workings of this artistic fusion between the technology and your shopping experience? Augmented Reality operates on the principle of superimposition, enhancing your real world with virtual 3D objects using AR tools and technologies. User-friendly and innovative, AR offers a truly interactive shopping journey, elevating your e-commerce experience while ensuring your confidence in your purchases. This means that almost every Apple's user can experience advanced AR functionalities (since iPhone7, iOS11).

On the other hand, ARCore, Google's counterpart for embedding augmented reality in Android ecosystems, is not far behind, with compatibility reaching around 1.405 billion devices (since Android 7).

This near parity in numbers reflects the widespread adoption and integration of AR technologies across the leading mobile operating systems, highlighting the massive potential audience for AR applications and experiences in the global smartphone market.

This data refers to July 2023 and the numbers continue to grow. Here are some benefits you can expect from a well designed AR experience:

Boosted Customer Engagement and Satisfaction: AR transforms passive browsing into an interactive and personally tailored shopping experience.

Ikea App experience: Ikea's AR app allows users to visualize what Ikea products will look like in their home before buying. Reports and reviews indicate that such tools lead to greater customer satisfaction because they help customers make better-informed decisions.

Many market studies have found that AR apps in retail can lead to increased engagement. Most shoppers prefer to shop at stores that offer AR experiences, and many of them would pay more for a product if they could experience it through AR.

Reduced Return Rates: with accurate visual representations of the furniture, customers are less likely to experience ‘buyer's remorse'.

Academic research suggests that providing more accurate and rich visual information can reduce returns because it leads to better expectations about the product. AR enables customers to interact with a true-to-scale 3D model of the product in their actual space, thus aligning expectations with reality.

Improved Conversion Rates: a great AR experience results in faster decision making, creating a higher likelihood for customers to 'add to cart'

Some furniture retailers have shared their performance metrics, indicating that consumers who engaged with AR were more likely to make a purchase: merchants who added 3D content to their stores saw a significant lift in conversion rates. Shopify, for instance, reported that interactions with 3D/AR content had a 94% higher conversion rate compared to products without AR/3D. https://changelog.shopify.com/posts/shop-adds-3d-and-augmented-reality-ar-previews

Exploring AR Adoption: Case Studies in Furniture Retail

Let’s consider two celebrated examples of furniture brands that have been at the forefront of adopting AR technology: Crate and Barrel and Ikea. While both have embraced this technological advancement to enhance the customer experience, they have taken distinct routes in integrating AR into their sales strategies. Crate and Barrel has opted for a web-based AR experience, making it seamlessly accessible to consumers without the need for additional applications. On the other hand, Ikea has pioneered an app-based AR approach, diving into the app ecosystem to provide a dedicated and feature-rich platform for their customers. This innovative technology seamlessly bridges the gap between the digital and physical worlds, enriching our real-world environment with digital information and media. Like a layer of digital paint on the physical canvas of our surroundings, AR offers a new dimension of interaction, enhancing everything from everyday tasks to complex professional workflows. It's not limited to any single device; smartphones, tablets, headgear, and more can serve as windows to these augmented vistas, making AR experiences broadly accessible and increasingly immersive.

Definition and Concept

Augmented Reality (AR) fundamentally enhances our perception of the real world by superimposing digital data, images, videos, and sound onto our surroundings. This convergence of digital and physical realms is facilitated by cutting-edge technology, primarily accessible through smartphones and specialized AR devices. Unlike virtual reality, which completely immerses users in a digital environment, AR enhances one’s current presence with overlays of information. This blend offers immense potential, from enriching games with fantasy creatures roaming our parks to assisting surgeons with real-time, life-saving data during procedures.

Historical Background

The seeds of Augmented Reality were sown as early as the 1960s with the creation of immersive head-mounted displays. However, it was in the 1990s that the term "augmented reality" was officially coined by Tom Caudell, a researcher at Boeing. He envisioned AR as a means to simplify the assembly of complex wiring in aircraft by projecting schematic diagrams directly onto physical components. Since these formative years, AR technology has made leaps and bounds, crossing over into consumer technology, and is now at the forefront of innovation in numerous industries.

1960s "Sword of Damocles", the first AR headset in the world

Components of Augmented Reality

AR's magic concoction involves a blend of hardware and software components, each pivotal for creating immersive augmented experiences.

Hardware Components

Display Devices

In AR, hardware serves as the conduit through which digital information meets the physical world. From the compact screens of smartphones and tablets to sophisticated AR glasses that project digital imagery right before a user's eyes, or even futuristic contact lenses in development, display devices are gateways to augmented realities. They enrich users’ visual fields with a layer of digital information, making the experience as seamless as possible.

Apple’s take on display device in the new Vision Pro, and its counterpart, the iPhone (courtesy of Apple)

Sensors

Sensors act as the nervous system of AR devices, gathering critical data about the user's environment and movements. GPS units pinpoint geographic locations, cameras capture the intricacies of the immediate surroundings, while accelerometers and gyroscopes detect motion and orientation. Together, they create a cohesive understanding of the user's context, enabling personalized and accurate AR overlays.

Processing Units

Just as the brain interprets sensory data to understand the world, processing units within AR devices compute inputs to generate and align augmented content with the real world. This requires immense computational capabilities, akin to the deliberations of a high-powered PC, crammed into a device small enough to be worn or held.

Software Components

Tracking Systems

Critical to AR is its ability to anchor digital content to the physical world in a stable and precise manner. This is the domain of tracking systems, which map the user's position and movements, ensuring that digital augmentations maintain their relevance and placement in the user's field of view, even as they move through space.

A visual representation of how the Lidar sensor on iPhone scans the world around (courtesy of shutterstock)

Rendering Engines

To convincingly merge digital content with the real world, AR uses sophisticated rendering engines. These engines simulate light, shadow, texture, and depth, breathing life into digital objects so they appear as tangible as the physical environment they're overlaid upon.

The difference shadows can make in AR representation (courtesy of Medium)

Content Management Systems

AR involves more than just placing digital objects in the real world it’s also about managing these elements in real-time.
